My story

Fifteen years ago, I moved from The Netherlands to Dubai with just a suitcase, expecting to stay for only a year for a job opportunity. What was supposed to be a short adventure turned into a 15-year epic journey that’s still unfolding. Shortly after moving, I met my Dutch husband and together, we now have three daughters.

Our family has moved 11 times across multiple continents, living in a variety of homes, from luxurious apartments on Dubai’s Palm Island to a vibrant high-rise in Ho Chi Minh City, and now in stunning Sydney, Australia. Along the way, I’ve fallen in love with the expat lifestyle and become an expert in creating a cozy home in temporary spaces, even when customization isn’t possible.

Navigating the challenges of moving—like finding the right suppliers, matching existing furniture to new environments, and even adhering to biosecurity rules—has taught me a lot. I’ve owned five different sofas, gone through a fair amount of rugs, and had over eight children’s beds. I’ve learned how to reimagine furniture, purchase the right items, and style a home away from home without excessive investment.

My passion for interiors only grew during this journey. When my children started school, I studied interior design and turned it into a career. Now, with Studio Amelia, I offer interior decorating services to expats and those relocating to temporary spaces. I provide both decorative and practical support, using my experience to help others create beautiful, functional homes.
